SUNLU PLA+ is a cheap, wide-color 1.75 mm filament that scores 7.5 out of 10 here, and two things hold the score back: nobody independent has published a diameter measurement for it, and the product page lists conflicting print temperatures. It costs $10.69 per 1 kg spool for the black version on the SUNLU store as of Oct 23, 2026. Buy it if you print mostly PLA on a modern enclosed or open-frame printer and want low cost per kilogram. Skip it if you need measured, lab-style consistency.

This review is researched, not tested in our own lab. The numbers below come from the brand’s published specs, the federal recall database and named third-party reviews. How we score explains the method.

Verdict: is SUNLU PLA+ worth buying?

Yes for price and color range, with two caveats you should plan around. First, the brand claims a diameter tolerance of 1.75 mm plus or minus 0.02 mm, but we found no independent caliper study that confirms it. Second, the product page gives more than one print temperature range, so you will need a short temperature tower before you trust any single number.

  • Price: $10.69 for black and $13.49 for the most expensive color options that ship to the USA. Price read on the SUNLU store on Oct 23, 2026.
  • Range: 36 color options listed for US shipping, including transparent, wood-tone and metallic-style shades.
  • Proof of tolerance: brand claim only.
  • Recalls: we searched the CPSC SaferProducts database for filament and for 3D printers. No filament recall came back.

Design and setup: what comes in the box and how to start

We did not handle this spool. The setup details below come from the SUNLU product page and from one named reviewer, First Quadcopter, who received a sample. SUNLU lists the spool as 1 kg net, 1.3 kg gross, with about 330 m of 1.75 mm filament. First Quadcopter reports the filament arrived in airtight vacuum bags with silica gel sachets, and that an unopened spool weighed 1,164 g on their scale. That review covers a 2023 shipment, so packaging may differ today.

  1. Open the vacuum bag only when you are ready to load. Keep the silica gel sachet and use a zip bag or dry box for storage afterward.
  2. Start from the page’s spec-table range: 205 to 215 C at 50 to 100 mm/s, or 215 to 245 C at 100 to 200 mm/s. Set the bed to 50 to 60 C.
  3. Print a temperature tower in 5 C steps. First Quadcopter ran this method on PLA+ and reports its best results at 210 to 215 C, which sits inside the first range.
  4. If you see strings, dry the spool before you change anything else. A buyer on the SUNLU store page says to dry it when you get it (quoted below).

One thing to know before you start: the same SUNLU page lists a lower range elsewhere, 195 to 205 C at 50 to 100 mm/s and 205 to 220 C at 100 to 300 mm/s. The brand does not explain the difference, and the page text and the spec table disagree on top speed too. That is why the tower matters.

How it scores: five criteria, with the evidence for each

The weighted result is 7.5 out of 10. The weights are fixed in advance, and the evidence below sets each subscore.

  • Diameter tolerance and print quality (30%): 7.0. The brand claims plus or minus 0.02 mm. First Quadcopter’s page lists a looser plus or minus 0.03 mm for PLA+ and reports no measurement of its own. 3D Print Watch repeats the 0.02 mm claim and also reports no measurement. With no independent figure, we score the claim cautiously.
  • Material and color range (15%): 8.0. 36 colors, but this is plain PLA+ only. Other materials such as PETG are separate SUNLU listings.
  • Spool and packaging (15%): 7.5. Vacuum-sealed with desiccant per First Quadcopter’s 2023 sample. Not independently confirmed for 2026 shipments.
  • Published print settings and support (20%): 6.5. The settings are published, but in conflicting ranges on one page.
  • 3-year cost (20%): 9.0. At $10.69 per kilogram it is cheap for a branded PLA+, though we did not price-compare other brands for this review.

The brand’s own mechanical figures, such as 46 plus or minus 5 MPa tensile strength and 10 plus or minus 3 kJ/m2 notched impact, are on the same page. We did not find an independent test that reproduces them, and the page’s marketing text elsewhere says 8 kJ/m2, so treat them as brand claims.

The Practical Math: what does a year of SUNLU PLA+ cost?

At the $10.69 black price, one spool a month for three years is 36 spools and $384.84 before shipping and tax. We assumed that usage rate. It is an example, not a measurement, so replace the 36 with your own count. A print-heavy hobbyist using 2 kg a month would pay about double.

The store’s struck-through list price of $18.99 is not the price we score. Colors vary by up to $2.80 per spool, so check your color before you multiply. Free shipping applies on orders over $40 per the store header, which is four spools or more at this price. A filament dryer is optional and is not in the total. See our SUNLU FilaDryer S4 review if wet spools are your problem.

What do owners say?

The SUNLU store page for this listing shows a 5.0 average from 200 reviews in its on-page widget, while the page’s own structured data lists 4.76 from 66. Both numbers come from the seller’s page, and a seller can remove reviews, so we treat them as weak evidence. Among the most recent reviews we read, one owner reported stringing and advised drying the spool first, and another reported clean prints on a stock profile. We could not open Reddit from our research environment, so there are no Reddit quotes here. An aggregator, GummySearch, ranks SUNLU first for PLA with 4.2 from 43 Reddit-derived reviews. That page does not link the individual threads.

Alternatives

The same-brand step up is SUNLU PLA+ 2.0, listed at $10.99 in the store catalog on Oct 23, 2026. For a head-to-head against another budget brand, read SUNLU vs Elegoo PLA. For other picks, see best PLA filament. If you are still deciding between materials, PLA vs PETG covers it.

Who should skip SUNLU PLA+?

Skip it if you run tight-tolerance parts and need a measured diameter log, if you print in a humid garage without a dry box, or if you want one clear temperature recommendation from the brand. Also skip it if you need a recycled or reusable spool system as the main feature.

FAQ

Is SUNLU PLA+ the same as PLA+ 2.0?

No. The store sells them as separate listings with separate prices. PLA+ 2.0 was $10.99 in the catalog we read on Oct 23, 2026.

What temperature should I print SUNLU PLA+ at?

The spec table says 205 to 215 C at 50 to 100 mm/s with a 50 to 60 C bed. Run a temperature tower, because the page also lists other ranges.

Is SUNLU PLA+ recalled?

We searched the CPSC SaferProducts database on Oct 23, 2026 and found no filament recall. One 3D printer recall exists, for a Bambu Lab A1 printer, which is a different product.

Does SUNLU PLA+ need drying?

The spool ships vacuum-sealed per the brand and one 2023 reviewer. A buyer on the store page still advises drying it on arrival if you see stringing.

How much does a kilogram cost?

$10.69 for black, up to $13.49 for other colors, on the SUNLU store on Oct 23, 2026.

What owners report

5.0 of 5 (on-page widget); the page's structured data lists 4.76 of 5 from 66 reviews from 200 ratings on SUNLU store page (seller's own page) read Oct 23, 2026

Ratings shown on a seller's own page can leave out reviews the seller removed. We read the most recent reviews ourselves and summarize what repeats.

  • −Some buyers on the seller's page report light stringing and advise drying the spool on arrival.
  • +Buyers on the seller's page report clean prints at a low price, including on a stock Bambu Lab A1 profile.

There's a bit of stringing, so dry it when you get it, but the print quality is decent enough.

The specs that matter, in plain English

Diameter tolerance
How far the filament's width may drift from 1.75 mm. Tighter tolerance means steadier extrusion.
PLA+
A marketing name for PLA blended with additives for toughness. There is no formal standard, so each brand's formula differs.
Temperature tower
A test print that steps the nozzle temperature by layer so you can pick the setting that prints best.
Notched Izod impact
A lab test of how much energy a notched sample absorbs before breaking, in kJ/m2.
