The HALO SleepSack Swaddle ($34.99) is the better buy of the two, and the LullaBaby Double Dream Swaddle ($39.99) is the one with less proof. HALO scores 7.9 out of 10 here and LullaBaby scores 6.2. The gap comes mostly from safe-sleep evidence: the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) names HALO products on its hip-healthy list and does not name LullaBaby. This comparison is researched from published specs, certification databases and named third-party sources, not tested in our own lab. See how we score. LullaBaby is an affiliate partner of this site, and its score follows the evidence only.

Both are zip-and-Velcro cotton swaddles for newborns, and both brands tell you to stop at the first signs of rolling. The details that decide it are hip room, price per size and how much an outsider has verified. Prices were read on the brand stores on Oct 23, 2026. For the wider field, see best swaddles.

How do the two swaddles compare side by side?

HALO wins on outside backing and price; LullaBaby has the more detailed two-wing wrap. Here are the facts as published by each brand and by named third parties.

Which one is safer for hips and loose fabric?

HALO has the stronger safe-sleep case, with one caveat about the exact product name. IHDI says a hip-healthy swaddle lets hips stay slightly bent and spread, and its published list names seven brands. HALO appears there for its “Sleep Sack Products and Deluxe Swaddle.” HALO’s own page says the SleepSack Swaddle is “approved by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute,” but the IHDI list does not spell out this exact title, so treat the match as the brand’s claim backed by a brand-level listing (IHDI).

LullaBaby makes no hip-healthy claim and is not on the list. It also publishes no chest or hip dimensions, so a parent has nothing to check against the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) fit advice. That is not proof of a problem. It means nobody outside the brand has checked it, as far as we could find. Both brands tell parents to stop swaddling at signs of rolling. The AAP says that can start around 2 months (AAP), and LullaBaby’s FAQ says “around 4 months,” so follow the earlier signal with either one.

What does each one do well?

HALO’s strength is flexibility and track record; LullaBaby’s is a short setup and a lower TOG. HALO lets you swaddle with arms in, hands to face or arms out, which eases the move away from swaddling. BabyGearLab scores the HALO SleepSack Swaddle 64 of 100 and does not list LullaBaby (BabyGearLab). One HALO owner on the brand page wrote that her baby is “definitely an arms up baby,” so she liked having the option.

LullaBaby’s brand how-to lists five steps and a zipper that opens from the bottom for diaper changes. Its 1.0 TOG estimate suits warmer rooms, and the brand pairs it with 68 to 75 F. HALO’s own TOG guide puts 1.5 TOG at 68 to 72 F, so check your nursery thermometer. If your room runs warm, the lighter fabric is a real point for LullaBaby, though the brand does not say how the TOG was measured.

What do owners complain about?

Both pages show fit and Velcro complaints, so neither is a sure thing for a squirmy baby. Ratings on both pages are hosted by the sellers, who can remove reviews. Of the 8 reviews on the first screen of HALO’s page, 2 complain about sizing or Velcro that does not line up. LullaBaby’s page shows 13 of 100 reviews at one or two stars, and 2 of the first 10 describe a baby escaping or an oversized Velcro area. The cost of an escape is a loose swaddle in the crib, so it matters more than a cosmetic gripe.

Which costs less over three years?

HALO costs $69.98 and LullaBaby costs $79.98 for two sizes each, before shipping. That assumes a Newborn then a Small from HALO, and the 0-2 then 2-4 month size from LullaBaby, since swaddling should end around the first rolling attempts. HALO does not publish weight ranges in the page text we read, so confirm the size chart before buying. HALO lists free shipping on orders over $75, which neither single swaddle reaches. No electricity or consumables apply.

Choose HALO if / Choose LullaBaby if

Choose HALO if you want a hip-healthy listing from IHDI, three arm positions, and a lower price per size.

Choose LullaBaby if you want a lighter 1.0 TOG fabric for a warmer room, you are comfortable checking hip room yourself, and you accept a higher price with less outside proof. Read the full LullaBaby review first. If you prefer a blanket wrap from the same brand, there is also the Dreamweave muslin swaddle. New to wrapping? FAQ

Has either swaddle been recalled?

We searched the CPSC SaferProducts database on Oct 23, 2026 for “swaddle,” “sleep sack” and “halo.” No recall of either swaddle model appeared. Older HALO SleepSack wearable blankets were recalled in 2013, and HALO Dream Magic Sleepsuits were recalled in March 2026. Those are different products.

Is the HALO SleepSack Swaddle hip-healthy?

HALO says so, and IHDI lists HALO sleep sack products and its Deluxe Swaddle. The exact title of this swaddle is not spelled out on IHDI’s page.

When should I stop swaddling?

Stop at the first signs of trying to roll. The AAP says some babies start around 2 months.

Can I machine wash them?

Yes. HALO says machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and tumble dry low. LullaBaby says machine wash with like colors and tumble dry low. Both say to close the zipper and fasteners first.

Which one is the safer pick for a first baby?

On published evidence, HALO, because of the IHDI listing and the longer public record. Either way, lay the baby on the back and keep the crib free of loose blankets.

  • −HALO: 2 of the 8 reviews on the first screen say the width or Velcro placement does not fit (seller page, read Oct 23, 2026).
  • +HALO: reviewers on the first screen mention the arms-out or arms-up option and quick setup, 2 of 8.
  • −LullaBaby: 13 of 100 reviews on the seller page are one or two stars, and 2 of the first 10 describe an escape or oversized Velcro area.

The sizing is way off on this swaddle. At the correct length, the width is WAY too big.

HALO store page review (verified buyer), Date not shown, read Oct 23, 2026

The Velcro area is way too big, along with the inner folds, and the baby comes right out of it with ease.

The specs that matter, in plain English

TOG
Thermal Overall Grade, a warmth rating for baby sleepwear. A higher number is warmer. Brands pair each TOG with a room temperature range.
IHDI
International Hip Dysplasia Institute, a nonprofit that publishes a list of hip-healthy swaddles.
Hip dysplasia
A condition where the hip joint does not form fully. IHDI says legs should have room to bend and spread in a swaddle.
Moro reflex
The startle reflex of newborns, with arms flung outward. Swaddles that hold the arms in limit it.
