We do not run these tests ourselves. Independent figures are quoted from the source named in each row.

The Love To Dream Swaddle Up Original 1.0 TOG ($34.95) is the best swaddle for most families. It is a zip-up, arms-up swaddle with a stretch cotton blend, three weight-based sizes from 5 to 19 lb, and a two-way zipper for night diaper changes. The HALO SleepSack Swaddle ($34.99) is the better buy if you want one sack that works arms in, hands up or arms out. The SwaddleDesigns Omni ($27.99) is the cheapest pick with a real wrap and zipper.

Every pick on this page is researched, not tested in our own lab. They come from published specs, certification and recall databases, and named third-party measurements, and you can read how we weigh them on How we score. If you are browsing the wider category, start at Baby Gear. A note on LullaBaby: it is an affiliate partner of this site, and its score below follows the evidence only. Weighted swaddles are excluded on purpose, because the AAP says not to use them.

How we picked

We scored five criteria and the weights add up to 100. Safe-sleep fit (hip room, no loose fabric) counts 35. Fabric and temperature (TOG) counts 20. Three-year cost counts 20. Ease of use (closures, zips) counts 15. Washing and durability counts 10. Safety carries the most weight because the downside of a bad swaddle is not a bad night, it is a safety problem.

Here is what we read on Oct 23, 2026. We opened each brand’s store page for price, sizes, fabric and care text. We read the American Academy of Pediatrics swaddling page, the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) hip-healthy list, the BabyGearLab swaddle ratings, the Babylist swaddle roundup, and the CPSC SaferProducts recall database. Owner feedback comes from review text on the Love To Dream and HALO store pages, which a seller can edit, so we label it that way. All of this is researched data from published sources, and no price, rating or recall is guessed.

The recall check found no recall of any swaddle model on this page. It did show two older or unrelated items worth knowing: HALO SleepSacks wearable blankets were recalled in 2013 for a choking hazard (a different, older product), and HALO Dream recalled Magic Sleepsuits in March 2026, which are not the swaddles we list.

LullaBaby ranks fifth. The pages we read give a TOG labeled “estimated” at 1.0 and two sizes (0 to 2 and 2 to 4 months) but no weight ranges, and no hip-position statement. Its page does load a Loox review widget showing 4.4 of 5 from 100 seller-hosted reviews, and a seller can remove reviews, so we count that as the brand’s view. Neither the IHDI list nor BabyGearLab covers it. The design is plausible on paper, with a zipper, inner wings and Velcro outer wings, but the evidence is thin, so it scores below the three brands with independent listings and just below aden + anais on the weighted score (6.3 against 6.4). Our full write-up is in the LullaBaby Double Dream review and the LullaBaby vs HALO comparison.

What to look for

  • Hip room. The IHDI says hips should sit in slight flexion and abduction during swaddling, and the AAP says legs should be able to bend up and out. If a design pins the legs straight, skip it.
  • Weight-based size. Pick the size by weight, not age. Love To Dream sizes run 5 to 8.5 lb, 8 to 13 lb and 13 to 19 lb, and SwaddleDesigns tells buyers not to size up. Babylist notes that Love To Dream sizing is strict.
  • A TOG that matches your room. Love To Dream rates its 1.0 TOG swaddle for 68 to 75 F. HALO rates its 1.5 TOG cotton swaddle for 68 to 72 F. Read your nursery thermometer before you choose.
  • No weights. The AAP says not to use weighted swaddles or weighted blankets. Every pick here is unweighted.
  • A zipper that opens from the bottom. A two-way zipper lets you change a diaper without unwrapping the arms. Babylist says HALO’s Velcro is loud when opened, which can wake a sleeping baby, so a zip-only closure is the quieter route.
  • A stop date. The AAP says to stop swaddling as soon as a baby shows any sign of trying to roll. Some babies start at 2 months.

FAQ

When should I stop swaddling?

Stop at the first signs of trying to roll over. The AAP says some babies begin working on rolling as early as 2 months. A swaddled baby who rolls onto the stomach is the main risk, so always lay a swaddled baby on the back.

Are weighted swaddles safe?

No. The AAP says not to use weighted swaddles or weighted blankets because they can press on a baby’s chest and lungs. That is why none appear here.

Is a muslin blanket a good first swaddle?

It can work, but it has the most loose fabric and the steepest learning curve. Babylist says aden + anais swaddles take practice and can be hard to get snug. A zip-up sack is easier to get right at 3 a.m. Loose blankets also do not belong in the crib once the baby is not swaddled. See our guide to swaddling a baby for the steps.

How many swaddles do I need?

Two of one size is a reasonable floor if you do laundry every few days. Love To Dream tells owners to wash after every use, so a single swaddle leaves you without one on wash night. Two Swaddle Ups cost $69.90 at today’s price.

Is the price the whole cost?

Mostly, but not always. Sized swaddles cover narrow weight bands (Love To Dream’s three sizes span 5 to 19 lb), so a growing baby may need a second size. We list that as an optional add-on, not part of the 3-year total.

What owners report

4.8 of 5 from 668 ratings on Love To Dream store page (Swaddle Up Original 1.0 TOG); second quote from the HALO store page read Oct 23, 2026

Ratings shown on a seller's own page can leave out reviews the seller removed. We read the most recent reviews ourselves and summarize what repeats.

  • +On the Love To Dream page, 616 of 668 ratings are 5 stars and 27 are 1 or 2 stars, counted from the page's own rating breakdown. A seller can remove reviews, so treat this as the brand's view.
  • −On the HALO page, 2 of the 6 reviews shown on the first screen mention stitching that frayed or fabric that felt rough.
  • −2 of those 6 HALO reviews are labeled incentivized by the store, so read the praise with that in mind.

Once our little one started getting fussy and hardly sleeping with being swaddled with his arms by his side, we needed something different.

The specs that matter, in plain English

TOG
A warmth rating for sleepwear. A higher number is warmer. Brands pair each TOG with a room temperature range, such as 68 to 75 F for 1.0 TOG at Love To Dream.
Hip-healthy swaddling
Wrapping a baby so the legs can bend up and out. The IHDI says hips should sit in slight flexion and abduction, and tight, straightened legs are linked to hip problems by the AAP.
Moro reflex
The startle reflex in newborns, where the arms fling outward. Swaddles that hold the arms in reduce it. Arms-up designs only partly do.
Weighted swaddle
A swaddle with sewn-in weight. The AAP says not to use weighted swaddles or blankets, so none are included here.
