Brand claim vs independent measurement
| Product | What the brand claims | Independent figure | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ruggie 2.0Maximum volume | Up to 110 dB on the max setting | No independent decibel reading found from any named tester. The 110 dB figure is the brand's claim only. | Ruggie product page |
| ClockyVolume | Loud R2D2-like robotic sound; no decibel figure published | Mattress Clarity says volume and pitch cannot be changed and it may not be loud enough for particularly heavy sleepers. No decibel reading was found. | Mattress Clarity |
| Ruggie 2.0Stop method | Stand on the mat for 3 to 60 seconds, your choice | NBC News reported in Jan 2016 that the original Ruggie shut off only after you stood on it for three seconds. It did not cover the 2.0 timer range. | NBC News |
| ClockyDurability | Durable, jumps from 3 feet | Mattress Clarity calls the plastic thin and says repeated falls may damage it. PopSci calls it durable. No failure-rate data exists. | Mattress Clarity and PopSci |
| BothRecalls | Not applicable | CPSC searches on Oct 23, 2026 for Ruggie, Clocky, alarm clock and alarm mat returned no records. A search for clock returned one 2018 recall by another maker. | CPSC SaferProducts |
We do not run these tests ourselves. Independent figures are quoted from the source named in each row.
The Ruggie edges the Clocky on paper, 6.9 to 6.7 out of 10, but it costs $99.00 against $31.99. The Ruggie is a mat that keeps sounding until you stand on it. The Clocky is a clock that jumps off the nightstand and rolls away. The picks on this site come from published specs, certification databases and named third-party measurements, not from our own lab. See how we score.
The gap is thin and the evidence is thinner: the Ruggie lead rests on its own unverified claims, such as the 110 dB maximum and the stand timer, which no tester has checked. Ruggie claims up to 110 dB, and Clocky publishes no decibel figure at all, but we found no independent loudness reading for either one. Clocky is an affiliate partner of this site. That did not move the score. If you want the full ranking of loud options, read our heavy sleeper roundup.
Which is the better alarm, Ruggie or Clocky?
The Ruggie is the better alarm on paper, and the Clocky is the better deal. Ruggie scores 6.9 because it documents more: an adjustable volume, a 3 to 60 second stand timer, two power options and a 30-day full refund. Clocky scores 6.7 because its method is proven but its volume is fixed and undocumented, and Mattress Clarity reports its snooze does not always work. The Ruggie’s own page lists $99.00 on Oct 23, 2026, with a crossed-out $198.00 and a “save 50%” label that is the seller’s own claim. Clocky’s store lists $31.99 for the original in black or blue.

What does the Ruggie do better?
The Ruggie removes the chase and adds control. Its page says you must stand on the mat for a time you choose, from 3 to 60 seconds, and that it has 17 or more alarm sounds and a volume range from a whisper to 110 dB. It has no apps, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. NBC News described the original 2016 version as a memory foam rug with built-in speakers that stopped only after three seconds of standing, so the core idea has been public for years.
The brand says it runs on 3 AAA batteries, USB-C or both, which is more than Clocky documents. On the Ruggie page, the widget we loaded showed ten verified reviews, all positive, and one owner wrote that they were afraid it would not be loud enough but it woke them right away. That widget belongs to the seller, so it is a weak signal. The page’s headline rating is 4.6 across 789 reviews, also seller-hosted.
What does the Clocky do better?
The Clocky wins on price and on a physical chase. At $31.99 it costs $67.01 less than the Ruggie over three years, about 6 cents a day. It jumps from a nightstand (the brand says 3 feet) and rolls while beeping, with an option for one snooze or none. PopSci names limited snoozes and getting you out of bed among its pros.
The weak points are documented. Mattress Clarity says you cannot change its volume or pitch and that it may not suit particularly heavy sleepers. On Amazon, 216 of 372 reviews that mention volume are negative. One owner wrote it was too easy to catch and turn off. The full numbers are in our Clocky review.
Is the Ruggie in stock and what does it really cost?
We could read a $99.00 price on the Ruggie product page on Oct 23, 2026, but we could not confirm you can buy it today. The page markup carries a “Sold out” label, while the same page’s structured data lists it as in stock and the store’s product feed marks it available. We did not place an order. Check the add-to-cart button before you plan around it.
Shipping is listed as free for now, normally $8.97, with a chart that says 7 to 21 business days to complete and dispatch. Returns are free of fees but not of postage: the customer pays return shipping within 30 days. The page also offers a one-year replacement as a $0 cart add-on, which we left out of the total. Neither brand prices batteries. Three years of the Ruggie is $99.00 plus batteries or a USB-C cable you may already own. Three years of the Clocky is $31.99 plus four AAA batteries.
Choose Ruggie if / Choose Clocky if
Choose the Ruggie if you want to set the volume yourself, want a stand timer longer than a few seconds, and can accept $99.00 and a long dispatch window. Place it at the door with your slippers on it, as one owner describes, so the first step lands on the mat.
Choose the Clocky if you are on a budget, wake to a normal beep, and want a cheap trial of the chase method. It suits a teenager or adult who snoozes by reflex. Skip it if your floor is crowded, since it can roll under furniture. If neither fits, our snooze guide lists free setups and our best alarm clocks list ranks the rest.
FAQ
How loud is the Ruggie?
The brand says its max setting reaches 110 dB. We found no independent measurement, so treat that as a claim.
How loud is the Clocky?
Clocky publishes no decibel figure and we found no tester reading. Mattress Clarity says it may not be loud enough for heavy sleepers.
Can you snooze either one?
The Ruggie page says it has no snooze button. Clocky allows one snooze or none, then it jumps and rolls, though Mattress Clarity reports the snooze does not always work.
Has either been recalled?
We searched the CPSC SaferProducts database on Oct 23, 2026 for “Ruggie”, “Clocky”, “alarm clock” and “alarm mat” and found nothing. A search for “clock” returned one 2018 bedside fire alarm and clock recall by another maker.
Which has the better return policy?
Ruggie gives 30 days for a full refund with you paying return shipping. Clocky gives a 90-day warranty and keeps $6 when you return it.

What owners report
Clocky 4.0 of 5 on Amazon; Ruggie 4.6 of 5 on ruggie.co from 9,658 ratings on Clocky Amazon listing (retailer page) read Oct 23, 2026
Ratings shown on a seller's own page can leave out reviews the seller removed. We read the most recent reviews ourselves and summarize what repeats.
- −Clocky: Amazon's counts show 372 reviews mentioning volume, 156 positive and 216 negative, and 269 of 694 functionality reviews are negative.
- +Ruggie: all ten reviews the seller's widget loaded were positive and several describe setting a longer stand time. This is a curated first page, not a sample, so it says little about failures.
- +Clocky: Amazon counts 343 reviews mentioning the wake-up function, 272 positive, with parents describing it as effective for teens.
As an adult, this is way too easy to catch and turn off. It's also not loud enough or annoying enough for me
