Brand claim vs independent measurement

ProductWhat the brand claimsIndependent figureSource
Sonic BombPeak alarm loudness 113 dB, adjustable Reviewed recorded a peak of 90 dB in its lab check and an office sound-isolating closet, louder than every other alarm it looked at. It did not state the distance, and the page is from 2021. Reviewed
Sonic Bomb Dual (sibling of the SBB500SS)Alarm performance 113 dB alarm with bed shaker TechGearLab scored the Dual 8.0 of 10 on its alarm metric and listed outlet power with a battery backup that saves settings. It is a sibling model, so this is indirect evidence. TechGearLab
Sonic BombTone and shaker intensity Adjustable tone and volume, 12V shaker Mattress Clarity's reviewer calls it the loudest alarm clock the reviewer has used, the tone abrasive and the vibrate mode jarring. It gives no decibel reading. Mattress Clarity
ClockyVolume control and durability Loud robotic alarm, jumps from about 3 ft Mattress Clarity lists no volume or pitch control, thin plastic and a snooze that does not always work. No decibel reading was found, and Clocky does not publish one. Mattress Clarity
ANJANKAlarm loudness Up to 112 dB No independent measurement was found. The 112 dB figure comes only from the brand's Amazon listing. ANJANK Amazon listing (brand claim only)
PeakeepAlarm loudness Loud alarm for heavy sleepers, no decibel figure published No independent measurement was found, and the brand publishes no decibel number. Peakeep Amazon listing (brand claim only)

We do not run these tests ourselves. Independent figures are quoted from the source named in each row.

If your phone alarm keeps losing, the Sonic Alert Sonic Bomb SBB500SS ($44.99) scores highest here because it stacks three wake-up methods: a claimed 113 dB horn, a 12V bed shaker and strobe lights. The ANJANK ($39.99) fits a shared bed, since its shaker is wireless and slides under your pillow. The Peakeep twin bell ($16.99) is the cheap mechanical option, and Clocky ($31.99) suits people whose real problem is snoozing.

Every pick comes from published specs, recall databases and named third-party measurements, not from a lab of our own (details on how we score). One warning before you buy: the only independent loudness reading we found for the Sonic Bomb was a 90 dB peak, not 113 dB, so treat every decibel number on a box as a brand claim. For gentle, smart and sunrise clocks, see the broader best alarm clocks list. This page covers only clocks built for people who prove hard to wake, and each one is scored on how it wakes you, how you shut it off, what happens in a power outage, how well it is likely to last and what it costs over three years.

How we picked

Each clock is scored from 0 to 10 on five weighted criteria: wake-up effectiveness (30%), controls and snooze rules (20%), power and battery backup (15%), build and durability (15%), and 3-year cost (20%). The weighted average sets the order, and the picks are researched from published data, not tested in our own lab (method).

We read the Sonic Alert and Clocky brand pages, the Amazon listings for the Peakeep, ANJANK, Sonic Bomb Dual and Clocky on Oct 23, 2026, TechGearLab’s alarm clock roundup, Reviewed’s decibel check of the Sonic Bomb, and Mattress Clarity’s heavy sleeper guide. We also searched the CPSC SaferProducts recall database for “alarm clock”, “clock” and “bed shaker”. The “clock” search returned six unrelated recalls (wall clocks, toys, a coffeemaker and a bedside fire alarm clock), and none covers a clock on this list.

The final scores are 7.5 for the Sonic Bomb, 6.8 for the ANJANK, 6.7 for Clocky and 6.6 for the Peakeep. The gaps are small, and the biggest swing factor is evidence: no pick has an independent decibel reading that matches its box, so wake-up scores lean on the second wake method (shaker or movement) and on what owners report. The 3-year cost covers the purchase price plus any battery we could price. Plug-in wattage is not published for the Sonic Bomb or the ANJANK, so electricity is left out rather than guessed.

What to look for

  • A second wake method. A published maximum near 110 dB is common, but Reviewed measured only 90 dB on the Sonic Bomb. Pick a clock that adds a bed shaker or movement so volume is not your only defense.
  • Shaker range and placement. A wired shaker is limited by its cord. ANJANK states a wireless range of 10 m (32.8 ft), so it works under a pillow or on the far side of a bed.
  • Snooze you can cap. Look for an adjustable snooze (Sonic Bomb: 1 to 30 minutes), a single snooze (Clocky) or none at all (Peakeep).
  • Ring time above 10 minutes. The Sonic Bomb can ring for 1 to 59 minutes, so a missed first cycle does not end the alarm.
  • Read the battery backup wording. Most plug-in clocks use a battery only to keep settings. ANJANK has no battery backup, and Sonic Alert says its backup keeps settings but does not say the alarm sounds on battery.
  • A warranty of at least 1 year. Sonic Alert gives 1 year, Peakeep gives 90 days, and Clocky does not state one on its product page.

FAQ

What is the best alarm clock for a heavy sleeper?

The Sonic Alert Sonic Bomb SBB500SS ranks first at 7.5 of 10 because it combines sound, a bed shaker and strobe lights, with adjustable snooze and ring time. TechGearLab named its Sonic Bomb Dual sibling the best for deep sleepers. The catch is durability: Amazon’s review summary for the Dual counts 1,133 negative mentions out of 1,506 on reliability, mostly units that stopped working.

Are the decibel ratings on these clocks accurate?

Not verified. Sonic Alert claims 113 dB and ANJANK claims 112 dB, but Reviewed’s lab check of the Sonic Bomb recorded a 90 dB peak and did not state the measuring distance. We found no independent reading for the ANJANK, and neither Peakeep nor Clocky publishes a decibel figure.

Is a bed shaker better than a louder alarm?

It is better if someone shares your room. TechGearLab says the Sonic Bomb’s bed vibrator wakes you without the alarm blaring for people sleeping nearby, and Mattress Clarity’s reviewer calls the vibration nearly impossible to sleep through. Owner reports are mixed: one Amazon reviewer wrote that they still slept through the shaker and the horn together.

Will Clocky wake a very heavy sleeper?

Clocky is built to stop snoozing, not to out-shout a deep sleeper. It jumps from about 3 ft and rolls away, but Mattress Clarity says its volume cannot be adjusted and may not be enough for the heaviest sleepers. Read the Clocky review and the snooze guide before choosing it.

Why is the Ruggie mat not ranked?

Ruggie’s page lists up to 110 dB, no snooze button and a stand-on countdown of 3 to 60 seconds, but on Oct 23, 2026 it showed a Sold out button and a price block that read $99 regular and $198 sale at once. We could not confirm a buyable price, so it is not scored. See Clocky vs Ruggie for the earlier comparison.

What owners report

4.5 of 5 from 37,071 ratings on Amazon listing for the Sonic Bomb Dual (retailer page, sibling of the SBB500SS) read Oct 23, 2026

Ratings shown on a seller's own page can leave out reviews the seller removed. We read the most recent reviews ourselves and summarize what repeats.

  • +Amazon's review summary says owners like a vibration strong enough to shake a queen-size bed, and many say the clock wakes heavy sleepers.
  • −Amazon's summary counts 1,506 reviews that mention reliability: 373 positive and 1,133 negative. A repeated complaint is that a unit stops working after some months.
  • −On loudness, Amazon's summary counts 3,949 mentions: 2,312 positive and 1,637 negative, so owner opinion is split.

It will definitely wake you up. The vibration is strong like someone's shaking you to wake up. Plus the volume of the buzzer is unmatched for loudness

The specs that matter, in plain English

Decibel (dB)
A unit of sound level. Every 10 dB sounds roughly twice as loud, so a true 113 dB would be far louder than the 90 dB Reviewed measured.
Bed shaker
A small vibrating disc that goes under a pillow or mattress and shakes when the alarm fires, so the wake-up does not depend on sound.
Battery backup
A battery inside a plug-in clock. Many only keep the time and alarm settings during an outage, and do not ring the alarm.
Snooze interval
The minutes between a snooze press and the alarm sounding again. Some clocks let you set it, cap it at one press or remove it.
