For most living rooms, buy the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty ($239.99) first. It posts a 233 CFM smoke CADR, AHAM Verified for a 361 square foot room using the smoke CADR times 1.55 room size math used throughout this guide, backs that coverage with a 3 year warranty, and keeps filters to about $59.79 a year. Weighted across CADR, noise, filter cost, features, and warranty, it comes out on top of this group at 7.8 out of 10.

If your room is smaller, under about 219 square feet such as a bedroom, nursery, or home office, pick the Levoit Core 300S-P ($149.99) instead. Its 141 CFM smoke CADR only covers that smaller footprint, but it runs at a whisper quiet 22 dB on low, and its filters are the cheapest here at $54.99 for a 2 pack that lasts 6 to 8 months, about $54.99 a year. Choose the Winix 5510 ($259.99) if you want WiFi control and a 3 color air quality light in a 392 square foot room. Or pick the Honeywell HPA5300B ($319.95) for the largest rooms up to 500 square feet, an open-plan living room or a finished basement, where its 323 CFM smoke CADR and 5 year warranty, the longest in this group, are worth the higher $281.35 three year filter bill.

How we picked

We scored each purifier on five criteria: CADR vs room size (30 percent), noise at a usable speed (20 percent), filter cost per year (20 percent), features and app support (15 percent), and warranty (15 percent). Full method at how we score.

We read the current listing on each brand’s own store (Levoit, Coway’s Cowaymega store, Winix America, and the Honeywell Store), noted the AHAM Verifide room size and CADR figures where the brand publishes them, and cross-checked noise and wattage against measurements from independent test sites where the brand page did not list them. These are researched picks based on published specs and reviewers’ test data, not units we tested in person ourselves.

What to look for

  • CADR that fits your room, in CFM. We use one formula throughout this guide: divide your room’s square footage by 1.55 to find the minimum smoke CADR you need, or multiply a purifier’s smoke CADR by 1.55 to see the room size it covers. A 361 sq ft room needs a smoke CADR of at least 233 CFM, which is exactly where the Coway sits, and a 500 sq ft room needs about 323 CFM, which is where the Honeywell lands.
  • Look for the AHAM Verifide seal. It is an independent lab test of room size and CADR, not a marketing number the brand picked itself. All four purifiers here carry it.
  • Noise on the speed you will actually run. A unit that hits 22 dB on low but 50 dB on high only helps you sleep if you leave it on low. If it will run overnight in a bedroom, look for a low-speed reading under 30 dB.
  • Filter cost per year, not just the purifier price. Replacement HEPA filters in this group run $55 to $90 depending on brand and pack size, and pre-filters on the Honeywell add another $64 a year on top of that.
  • Watts, if it will run 24 hours a day. At the national average of $0.17 per kWh, a 23 W unit run around the clock costs about $34 a year in electricity. A 77 W unit costs closer to $115 a year for the same runtime.
  • Warranty length. Coverage in this group runs from 2 years on the Levoit and Winix up to 5 years on the Honeywell InSight line.

FAQ

What CADR do I actually need?

Using the CADR to room size math above, a 300 sq ft bedroom needs a smoke CADR of about 194 CFM or more, and a 500 sq ft great room needs about 323 CFM or more, which is where the Honeywell HPA5300B lands.

Is a bigger CADR always the better buy?

Not if it means oversizing for your room. A high-CADR unit in a small bedroom often means running it on a lower, quieter speed anyway, so matching CADR to your actual square footage usually beats buying the biggest unit you can find.

How often do I really need to change the filter?

It depends on the model and how dusty or smoky the air is. Levoit recommends every 6 to 8 months for the Core 300S-P filter, Coway recommends 6 months for the deodorization filter and 12 months for the HEPA filter, and Winix and Honeywell both recommend 12 months for their HEPA filters. See our Levoit filter replacement guide for the steps.

Will an air purifier help with allergies or asthma?

A HEPA purifier can reduce airborne particles like pollen, dust, and pet dander in a room. It is not a treatment for asthma or allergy symptoms, and persistent symptoms are worth discussing with a doctor.

What if I have pets?

Look for a model with a washable pre-filter and a higher CADR for your room size to keep up with pet dander and hair. Our best air purifiers for pets guide covers pet-specific picks and filter types in more depth. The Levoit Core 300 line, covered in our Levoit Core 300 review, is also a common starting point for a single pet-owner’s bedroom.
