If you share a home with a shedding dog or a litter box, start with two numbers: the purifier’s smoke CADR against your room size, and what the filters cost you every year after the sale. After comparing spec sheets, AHAM Verified figures and filter pricing straight from each brand’s own store, the Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max comes out on top for pet owners with mid-size to large rooms. It posts the highest smoke CADR in this group at 435 CFM, AHAM Verified for a 674 sq ft room, and its 1-year warranty extends to 3 years free when you register the unit. The Coway Airmega 400 is close behind, built for even bigger spaces at 328 CFM smoke CADR and backed by a 5-year warranty on the motor and electronics.

For smaller rooms or a tighter filter budget, the Levoit Core P350-P Pet Care pairs a dedicated pet odor carbon layer with the cheapest replacement filter here at $35.99. The Coway Airmega Mighty AP-1512HH swaps a disposable pre-filter for a washable one you rinse instead of replace, and its filter set is the least expensive in this lineup at $59.79 a year. The Honeywell HPA5300B backs a 5-year warranty and a 323 CFM smoke CADR, and sells a separate Pet Odor Filter S if you want extra odor control on top of its standard HEPA and pre-filter, though its filters already cost the most to keep running before you add that option.

How we picked

Every product below is scored on five criteria: CADR against room size (30%), noise at a speed you would actually run day to day (20%), filter cost per year (20%), pet-specific features like washable pre-filters and odor filters (15%), and warranty length, scored on what you actually get with free registration where a brand offers it (15%). Full methodology is on our scoring page. We read each brand’s own product, filter and warranty pages, including Levoit, Coway, Blueair and Honeywell Store, plus a Home Depot listing and an Abt Electronics filter listing, and AHAM Verified certification data where the brand published it. These are researched picks based on published specs and documented pricing. No unit on this list was purchased or run in person for this article.

What to look for

  • Smoke CADR at least two-thirds of your room’s square footage. AHAM’s rule of thumb works out to roughly smoke CADR times 1.55 for a comfortably covered room, so a 300 sq ft room wants a smoke CADR of at least 200 CFM. The same smoke CADR x 1.55 formula sets every product’s room size in the specs below.
  • Noise under 50 dB on the speed you will actually use. A purifier rated at 20 dB on its lowest setting can still hit 55 dB or more on high, so check both ends of the range. If a brand does not publish a dB number at all, treat its noise language as marketing copy, not a measurement.
  • A washable pre-filter. Pet hair and dander clog a bare HEPA filter fast. A washable fabric or mesh pre-filter that you rinse or vacuum extends the main filter’s life and cuts your yearly filter bill.
  • An activated carbon or dedicated odor layer. Standard HEPA captures particles, not smell. Litter box and wet-dog odor need a carbon stage, and a few brands sell a separate pet odor filter on top of the standard filters, worth pricing before you buy.
  • Filter price and interval together, for every filter the unit needs. A $25 filter you replace every 3 months costs more per year than a $70 filter rated for 9 months, and some purifiers run two or three filter types on different schedules. Multiply each filter’s price by its replacements per year before comparing total cost.
  • Warranty length of 2 years or more, counting free registration. Several brands only give you the full warranty term after you register the unit online, so put that on your setup checklist the day it arrives.

FAQ

Do air purifiers actually remove pet odor, or just pet hair?

A plain HEPA filter traps hair, dander and dust but does little for smell. Odor control comes from an activated carbon layer or a dedicated odor filter, like the carbon layer built into the Levoit Core P350-P or Honeywell’s optional Pet Odor Filter S, sold separately from the HPA5300B’s standard HEPA and pre-filter.

How often should I replace the filter if I have pets?

Follow the brand’s stated range, and lean toward the shorter end with more than one pet or an open litter box nearby. In this group that means about every 6 to 8 months for the Levoit and Blueair filters, every 6 months for the washable pre-filter and deodorization filters on the Coway Airmega Mighty AP-1512HH, and about every 12 months for the HEPA filters in both Coway units and the Honeywell HPA5300B.

Where should I place a pet air purifier?

Near the pet’s main resting spot or litter box, at least a foot from walls and furniture so air can circulate on all sides, and off the floor if your model does not use 360-degree intake.

Will a HEPA filter stop my dog or cat from shedding?

No. It captures hair and dander already in the air after it sheds. It does not change how much your pet sheds. Pair it with regular brushing and vacuuming for the biggest difference; see our pet hair vacuum picks for that half of the job.

Is a higher CADR always better for a pet home?

Only up to your room size. A CADR far above what your square footage needs adds cost and noise without a real benefit. Match smoke CADR to about two-thirds of your room’s square footage, then weigh noise, filter cost and pet-specific features from there.
