Brand claim vs independent measurement

ProductWhat the brand claimsIndependent figureSource
Sonic BombAlarm performance score 113 dB extra-loud alarm with bed shaker TechGearLab scored the Sonic Bomb Dual 8.0 of 10 for its alarm. That is a sibling model with the same 113 dB claim, so it is indirect evidence for the clock we list. TechGearLab
Sonic BombLoudness ranking 113 dB extra-loud alarm Mattress Clarity calls it one of the loudest alarm clocks on the market and warns that the tones can be harsh. It does not publish a decibel reading of its own. Mattress Clarity
Hatch Restore 3Tester ratings for build and function Hatch does not publish a build or durability rating Sleepopolis named it the best overall alarm clock and says its in-house reviewer gave it 4 of 5 or higher for user-friendliness, build and functionality. Sleepopolis
Philips Wake-up LightLight output Up to 250 lux, rising over 30 minutes No independent lux reading for the HF3471/60 was found. Tom's Guide praised a different Philips model, the SmartSleep, for natural-light simulation, so treat that as indirect. Tom's Guide
ClockyDurability and volume control Jumps from 3 ft; loud robotic sound Mattress Clarity lists no volume control and weak durability as cons. No independent decibel measurement was found, and Clocky does not publish one. Mattress Clarity

We do not run these tests ourselves. Independent figures are quoted from the source named in each row.

The Sonic Bomb alarm clock from Sonic Alert is the best all-round pick on the evidence, because it is the only clock here that combines a published 113 dB alarm, a bed shaker and a snooze you can set from 1 to 30 minutes, for $44.99. The picks below come from published specs, certification databases and named third-party measurements, not from our own lab. Here is how we score.

Buy the Sonic Bomb if you want noise and vibration. Buy the Clocky if you want an alarm you must get up to stop. Buy the Hatch Restore 3 or the Philips Wake-up Light if you want light and a softer sound, and accept a higher price. If your main problem is sleeping through everything, read our separate list of alarm clocks for heavy sleepers.

How we picked

We scored four clocks from four brands on five criteria: wake-up effectiveness (30%), controls and snooze rules (20%), power and battery backup (15%), build and durability (15%) and 3-year cost (20%). Every score comes from reading, not from using the clocks.

Sources we read: the Sonic Alert, Philips, Hatch and Clocky product pages; the Hatch FAQ and recall notice; TechGearLab’s alarm clock comparison; Mattress Clarity’s heavy-sleeper roundup; Sleepopolis and Tom’s Guide roundups; the CPSC SaferProducts recall database; and the Amazon listing for the Sonic Bomb Dual. Prices were read on Oct 23, 2026. The picks are researched from published data, not tested in our own lab. See how we score for the full method.

Scores run from 0 to 10 per criterion and are weighted by the percentages above. Where a brand publishes nothing, we scored the gap down rather than assume a good result. That is why the Philips and Hatch score low on power: neither publishes a backup spec on the pages we read. Cost is the 3-year total. Each clock is a one-time purchase, so cost here equals the price on Oct 23, 2026, and we left out batteries and optional subscriptions because their prices or replacement rates are not published.

Two limits matter. First, only TechGearLab published a score for a Sonic Bomb, and it tested the Sonic Bomb Dual, a sibling of the model we list. Second, Clocky does not publish a decibel figure or a battery-backup spec, so its score is held down by missing data. Our Clocky review covers that clock alone.

What to look for

  • A published volume. Look for a stated decibel figure. Sonic Alert states 113 dB; Clocky, Philips and Hatch do not give one on the pages we read.
  • Snooze you can limit. Prefer a clock where snooze runs 1 to 30 minutes, or where it can be turned off. Clocky allows one snooze or none, though Mattress Clarity reports its snooze does not always work.
  • A second wake-up channel. Vibration, light or movement helps when sound alone fails. The Sonic Bomb ships with a bed shaker, and the Philips ramps light over 30 minutes up to 250 lux.
  • A backup for power cuts. Check whether the clock keeps its settings, and whether the alarm still sounds. The Sonic Bomb uses a 9V battery to hold settings; Sonic Alert says nothing about the alarm sounding on battery.
  • Wi-Fi only if you want it. The Hatch Restore 3 works with a phone app and your home network, and Hatch says no subscription is required. A basic clock has no setup account.
  • A warranty of at least 1 year. Sonic Alert and Hatch give 1 year, Philips gives 2 years, Clocky gives 90 days.

FAQ

What is the best alarm clock for most people?

The Sonic Bomb with Super Shaker is our top pick at $44.99. It scored highest because its volume is published at 113 dB, it adds a bed shaker and flashing lights, and snooze is adjustable. Its weak spot is reliability, since a share of Amazon owners report units that stop working.

Should I just use my phone alarm?

A phone is free and always charged, but it sits within reach and makes snoozing easy. A dedicated clock lets you leave the phone across the room, and the Sonic Bomb and Clocky add a stronger cue than a ringtone. If you only need one extra step, start with a $31.99 Clocky or the free options in our snooze guide.

Is a sunrise alarm clock worth the money?

It is worth it if you want a gentle start and can pay $129.99 to $169.99. Philips says its light rises over 30 minutes before your wake time and reaches up to 250 lux. It is a poor choice if you sleep through quiet sounds, because the sounds are soft by design.

Does an alarm that runs away work better than a loud one?

The Clocky gives you a reason to leave bed, but the evidence is thin. Mattress Clarity lists no volume control and weak durability as cons. Amazon owner reviews are split on how loud it is.

Do any of these clocks keep time in a power cut?

Sonic Alert says the Sonic Bomb keeps its settings through a power outage with a 9V battery, which is not included. Clocky runs on 4 AAA batteries. Philips and Hatch do not publish a battery-backup spec on the pages we read.

Were any of these clocks recalled?

We searched the CPSC SaferProducts database for alarm clocks on Oct 23, 2026 and found no recall for any model listed here. Hatch has a recall for the power adapter on some first-generation Hatch Rest devices, which does not cover the Restore 3.

What owners report

4.5 of 5 from 37,071 ratings on Amazon listing for the Sonic Bomb Dual (retailer page, sibling of the SBB500SS) read Oct 23, 2026

Ratings shown on a seller's own page can leave out reviews the seller removed. We read the most recent reviews ourselves and summarize what repeats.

  • +Amazon's review summary says owners like the strong vibration, which several describe as able to shake a queen-size bed, and many say it wakes heavy sleepers.
  • −Amazon's summary counts 3,949 reviews that mention loudness: 2,312 positive and 1,637 negative. A repeated complaint is that a unit suddenly stops working.

It will definitely wake you up. The vibration is strong like someone's shaking you to wake up. Plus the volume of the buzzer is unmatched for loudness

The specs that matter, in plain English

Decibel (dB)
A unit of sound level. Every 10 dB sounds roughly twice as loud, so 113 dB is far louder than 90 dB.
Sunrise alarm
A lamp that brightens slowly before your wake time so light, not only sound, cues you to wake.
Lux
A unit of light falling on a surface. Philips says its lamp reaches up to 250 lux.
Bed shaker
A small vibrating disc that goes under the pillow or mattress and shakes you awake without relying on sound.
Battery backup
A battery that keeps the clock's time and settings during a power cut. It may not power the alarm itself.
