The ASKGO GT16 is a $999.99 off-road e-bike with big spec-sheet numbers and weak evidence behind them. It scores 5.0 out of 10 here. The battery is large on paper, but the 65-mile range, the 3000W peak figure and the UL 2849 label all come from the seller. Owner ratings on the retailer page are low. Buy it only if you can live with a long wait for support and you will ride on private land.

This review is researched, not lab tested. The score comes from published specs, a federal recall search, UL Solutions documentation, a federal statute, and owner ratings on Walmart. Our method is on the How we score page. Prices were read on Oct 23, 2026.

Verdict: who should buy the GT16?

Buy the GT16 only if you want a cheap, powerful-looking off-road bike for private trails and you accept the risk of slow support. Skip it if you need a bike for roads, bike paths or a daily commute, or if you want a warranty you can read before you pay. The brand’s own store lists it at $999.99. Walmart showed $665.44 (was $999.99) on the same day, sold by the same brand’s seller account. That $334.55 gap matters more than any spec on the page.

Design and setup: what do the specs say?

This section uses the brand page, the retailer listing and named owner reviews, not our own setup. The picks on this site come from published specs, certification databases and named third-party measurements, as explained on How we score.

  • Motor: 750W rated, 3000W peak, 28 MPH top speed (ASKGO store page).
  • Battery: 48V 25Ah. That multiplies out to 1,200 Wh. This is arithmetic from the brand figures, not a lab measurement.
  • Range claim: 65 miles.
  • Wheels and frame: 16 inch tires, alloy steel frame, dual suspension, headlight and taillight.
  • Brakes: the store spec says dual disc brakes. The product title says dual hydraulic. The spec table does not name the brake brand.
  • Load limit: 365 lb.
  • Age: 16 and up.

Setup is where owners complain first. One verified Walmart buyer wrote that the assembly instructions were not detailed and caused guesswork (Walmart review, Dec 28, 2025). We did not find a setup video or manual on the brand page we read. The product page text also showed a Sold out label on Oct 23 while the store catalog marked the item available, so check stock before you order.

How it scores: does the evidence back the claims?

The GT16 scores 5.0 out of 10 because three of the five criteria rest on seller claims that no outside party has checked. Here is how each criterion came out, using the weights from our method.

  • Rated range and battery, 25%: 5.5. 1,200 Wh is a big pack on paper. But no tester has published a GT16 range run. Electric Bike Report rides to an empty battery at high and low assist and reports a minimum and maximum, and it has no GT16 test. One Walmart buyer reported about 8 miles in cold weather. That is a single report, not a pattern.
  • Motor and hill power, 20%: 5.5. The 3000W peak is a seller figure. A Walmart buyer said the bike tops out near 30 mph only with a full battery and drops to about 25 mph after a small drain. No independent hill test exists.
  • Brakes and UL 2849, 20%: 4.5. The listing says UL2849 Certified. We could not find or open the certificate, so we could not confirm it. UL Solutions says the standard covers the drive train, battery and charger as a system and does not judge whether the rider can keep control. Brakes and frame strength are outside what that label proves. One buyer reported rear spokes popping off after one ride (Walmart review, Aug 20, 2026).
  • Warranty and service, 15%: 3.0. The store’s refund policy offers 30 days for return or exchange. We did not find a written warranty term on the pages we read. The Walmart seller account shows 3.3 out of 5 across 504 ratings, and recent complaints focus on refunds and slow replies.
  • 3-year cost, 20%: 6.0. $1,061.19 at the brand price, or about $726.64 at the Walmart price. The cost is fair if the bike lasts. The service record makes that a risk.

The Practical Math: what does it cost over 3 years?

The 3-year cost is $1,061.19 at the brand price of $999.99. Battery energy is 1.2 kWh per full charge. We assumed 100 full charges a year, about two per week. That is 120 kWh a year, 360 kWh over 3 years, at $0.17 per kWh, or $61.20. Charger losses are not included because ASKGO does not publish the charger wattage.

No consumable prices are documented, so tires, brake pads and a replacement battery are left out of the total. Walmart’s 3-year protection plan was listed at $59.00 and the 4-year plan at $79.00. Those are optional add-ons and are not in the total.

Is the GT16 street legal?

The GT16 falls outside the federal low-speed electric bicycle definition (15 U.S.C. 2085, a consumer-product definition), so it may not count as a bicycle under your state’s law. Check your state code before riding it on public ground. Federal law (15 U.S.C. 2085) defines a low-speed electric bicycle as having working pedals, a motor under 750 watts, and a top speed under 20 mph on motor power alone. A 3000W peak motor and 28 MPH top speed sit outside that line. ASKGO’s store page calls the GT16 off-road and gives no Class 1, 2 or 3 label. Do not rely on a class label, because none appears on the brand’s own page. Rules for roads, paths and parks are set by each state and city. Look up your state’s e-bike law and your local park rules before you ride.

Recalls and safety record

We searched the CPSC SaferProducts recall database for the brand name and for electric bikes on Oct 23, 2026. No recall names ASKGO or the GT16. The CPSC proposed a mandatory battery rule for micromobility products on June 24, 2026. It points to UL 2849 for e-bikes and cites 227 battery incidents with 39 deaths from 2019 to 2023 (summary by Beveridge & Diamond). That is why a real, checkable UL 2849 certificate matters. Ask ASKGO for the certificate number and the lab name before you buy.

Alternatives

  • ASKGO 20 inch fat tire dirt bike. The same seller lists a 750W rated, 48V 20Ah model at $549.99 on Walmart (was $749.99), rated 3.9 out of 5 from 84 reviews on the day we read it. It is cheaper and has more reviews than the GT16.
  • ASKGO GT30. See the ASKGO GT30 review for the brand’s other off-road model.

Who should skip it

  • Anyone who needs a bike for public roads, since the GT16 falls outside the federal low-speed electric bicycle definition and may not count as a bicycle under your state’s law.
  • Anyone who wants a written warranty term before paying.
  • Riders over 365 lb including gear.
  • Anyone who expects to read independent range or hill tests first. None exist yet.

FAQ

How far will the GT16 really go?

No independent range test exists, so 65 miles is unverified. The pack is 1,200 Wh by arithmetic. Rider weight, terrain and assist level change real range a lot.

Is the GT16 UL 2849 certified?

The seller says so. We could not open the certificate. UL 2849 covers the electrical system, not brakes or frame strength.

How do owners rate it?

On the Walmart listing, 12 of 19 ratings were 1 or 2 stars and 5 were 5 stars. The average was 2.6 out of 5. Treat it as one view.

Which is cheaper, the brand store or Walmart?

On Oct 23, 2026 the brand store showed $999.99 and Walmart showed $665.44. Prices change often, so recheck both.

Can I return it?

The brand’s refund policy allows return or exchange within 30 days if the bike comes back in brand new condition. Recent Walmart seller reviews report slow refunds, so keep your photos and messages.

What owners report

2.6 of 5 from 19 ratings on Walmart listing sold by ASKGO Ebike Direct (seller page) read Oct 23, 2026

Ratings shown on a seller's own page can leave out reviews the seller removed. We read the most recent reviews ourselves and summarize what repeats.

  • −12 of the 19 ratings on the Walmart listing were 1 or 2 stars (7 one-star, 5 two-star), against 5 five-star ratings.
  • −A repeated complaint is that delivered parts or specs differ from the listing: a snapped fender, a wheel-size claim, and speed that sags as the battery drains.
  • −Support and refunds: 5 of the 10 most recent reviews on the seller account page were 1 star, several about slow replies or unpaid returns.
  • +Delivery and the seller account get praise in several 5-star seller reviews, for example that an order arrived on time and as described.

Assembly instructions were not detailed and created a lot of guess work.

The specs that matter, in plain English

UL 2849
A safety standard for e-bike electrical systems. It covers the drive train, battery and charger together. It does not judge rider control.
Rated vs peak watts
Rated watts is the motor's continuous output. Peak watts is a short burst. Brands often show peak in the title, which makes the motor look bigger.
Watt-hours (Wh)
Battery energy. Multiply volts by amp-hours: 48V x 25Ah = 1,200 Wh.
Low-speed electric bicycle
The federal term for a pedal bike with a motor under 750 W that cannot pass 20 mph on motor power alone.
