1. Unplug the unit, empty the tank, then empty the base into the sink.
2. Pour in just enough undiluted white vinegar to cover the nebulizer disc and let it soak at least 20 minutes. For heavy scale, Vicks’ instructions say to let it soak several hours or overnight.
3. While it soaks, wipe around the disc with a cotton swab to remove deposits.
4. Empty the vinegar and rinse the base with water. Never run the unit with vinegar still inside it.

Warm mist and evaporative humidifiers with a heating element

Honeywell’s descaling guide covers units that heat water instead of vibrating it:

1. Unplug the unit and remove the water tank and any removable tray.
2. Fill the base with undiluted white vinegar until the heating element is submerged. Do not submerge the whole base in liquid.
