Riders who mostly care about price should look at the Hiboy S2 Pro, which costs less than half of the Max G2. We read the current product page on each brand’s own store, Segway, Gotrax, Hiboy, and Levy Electric, for price, specs, and certification claims, checked on Sep 16, 2026. We cross-checked every model against the CPSC recall database at saferproducts.gov, which lists past electric scooter recalls for stem welds that crack, folding hinges that fail mid-ride, and loose suspension bolts, none of which turned up for the four models here. For independent performance numbers, this article draws on TechGearLab’s published electric scooter test data and Consumer Reports’ 2026 group test of 13 scooters, named and linked wherever we cite a figure that did not come from the brand itself. Owner sentiment came from the retailer’s own posted customer reviews, labeled as such below, since Reddit threads on these specific models were too thin to quote responsibly.

What to look for

  • A named UL 2272 listing, not just the word “certified.” Look for the brand to name the standard directly, the way Segway cites a TÜV Rheinland UL 2272 listing and Hiboy names both UL 2272 and a UL 2271 battery certificate. A page that only says a scooter is “safety tested” without naming UL 2272 has not told you what was actually tested.
  • Battery capacity of at least 400 watt-hours if you want real-world range past 15 miles once you subtract for hills, cold weather, and stop-and-go city riding.
  • Two independent brakes, meaning one mechanical brake, drum or disc, plus a separate electronic brake, not an electronic brake alone. All four scooters here meet that bar.
  • Weight under 40 lbs if you plan to carry the scooter up stairs, onto a bus, or into an office instead of parking it outside all day.

Are electric scooters legal to ride on the street?

Rules vary by city and state. Most U.S. cities that allow rental scooter programs also allow personally owned electric scooters on streets and in bike lanes, but speed limits, sidewalk riding, and minimum age requirements often differ by local ordinance. Check your city’s department of transportation page before riding on public roads.

What does UL 2272 actually certify?

UL 2272 is a safety standard that covers the electrical drive train and battery system of a personal e-mobility device, including protection against overcharging, short circuits, and battery fires. It does not test ride quality, braking distance, or how a scooter performs in rain. A model can pass UL 2272 and still have weak brakes or a stiff ride, which is why we score safety and ride quality separately.

How long do electric scooter batteries last before they need replacing?

Lithium-ion scooter batteries typically hold a usable charge for 300 to 500 full charge cycles before their capacity drops enough to notice, which works out to roughly 2 to 3 years for most daily commuters. Charging habits matter too: letting the battery sit fully drained for long stretches, or charging it in high heat, both shorten that lifespan.

Is a heavier scooter safer than a lighter one?

Not automatically. Weight mostly affects stability and how a scooter absorbs bumps, not how well its brakes or battery system are engineered. The Segway Max G2 weighs nearly twice as much as the Levy Plus, and both brands make UL-related certification claims, though only the Max G2’s UL 2272 listing is confirmed by name on the brand’s own page.

Should I buy a scooter that is not confirmed UL 2272 certified?

We would not recommend it. UL 2272 is the standard most U.S. retailers and many city rental programs require, and it is the main independent check against battery fires, which are among the most common hazards listed in CPSC electric scooter recalls. If a brand’s page only says a scooter is “UL certified” without naming UL 2272 specifically, treat that as unconfirmed rather than assuming it meets the standard, and price that uncertainty into your decision as we did with the Levy Plus in this list.

Do these scooters need much maintenance beyond charging?

Pneumatic tires need occasional air top-offs and can puncture, which is the tradeoff for the softer ride they give versus airless honeycomb tires like those on the Hiboy S2 Pro. Folding hinges on any scooter loosen with use and are worth checking every few weeks.
