Buyers who mow a half acre or less and want to spend under $450 should look at the RYOBI 40V HP Brushless 20 inch mower, which costs about half of the EGO while still self-propelling. Homeowners who don’t mind pushing instead of riding behind a self-propelled deck can consider the CRAFTSMAN V60 21 inch mower, though in our research it cost more than the Greenworks despite a smaller battery and no self-propel feature.

  • Runtime of 40 minutes or more per charge. The mowers we researched ranged from 40 minutes to 75 minutes on a full battery.
  • Height-of-cut range of at least 1.5 to 4 inches. A wider range lets you scalp for the first spring cut and let grass grow taller in summer heat.
  • Self-propel if your lot is uneven or over a quarter acre. A push-only deck like the CRAFTSMAN V60 works fine on flat, small lawns but adds real effort on slopes.
