Buyers who mow a half acre or less and want to spend under $450 should look at the RYOBI 40V HP Brushless 20 inch mower, which costs about half of the EGO while still self-propelling. Homeowners who don’t mind pushing instead of riding behind a self-propelled deck can consider the CRAFTSMAN V60 21 inch mower, though in our research it cost more than the Greenworks despite a smaller battery and no self-propel feature.

- Battery capacity of at least 5.0Ah. Below that, expect to stop and recharge before a mid-size lawn is finished.
- Runtime of 40 minutes or more per charge. The mowers we researched ranged from 40 minutes to 75 minutes on a full battery.
- Height-of-cut range of at least 1.5 to 4 inches. A wider range lets you scalp for the first spring cut and let grass grow taller in summer heat.
- Self-propel if your lot is uneven or over a quarter acre. A push-only deck like the CRAFTSMAN V60 works fine on flat, small lawns but adds real effort on slopes.

Is a self-propelled mower worth paying more for?

- Ah (amp-hour)
- A measure of how much energy a battery pack holds. A higher Ah number at the same voltage means a longer runtime before the battery needs a recharge.
- Self-propelled
- A mower with a drive system that moves the wheels forward on its own, so you guide it instead of pushing its full weight. A push mower has no drive system and relies on you for all forward motion.
- Brushless motor
- An electric motor design without physical brush contacts, which wears out more slowly and runs more efficiently than a brushed motor, so the battery lasts longer per charge.
- 4-in-1 / 3-in-1 deck
