Verdict

The AlfredCam is a $29.99 indoor camera with 1080p video and a microSD slot, and it scores 5.4 out of 10 on our five criteria. The hardware is cheap and does the basics. The weak spot is the app: the free tier shows ads, sends motion-only alerts, and since August 2024 new buyers need Alfred Premium to watch recorded events inside the app.

This review is researched, not lab-tested. The scores come from published specs, Alfred’s help pages, store listings, the CPSC recall database, one named outlet’s review and owner reviews, as explained on how we score. The only independent review we found is PCMag’s, from March 2024, so some points rest on brand claims, and each section says which.

Buy it if you want a very cheap camera, will record to a card and pull footage on a computer, or are fine paying about $3 a month. Skip it if you want ad-free live view, person alerts and in-app playback at no cost.

Design and setup

Setup details here come from Alfred’s launch blog, its help center and PCMag’s write-up, not from handling the camera. The camera is 3.8 x 2.3 x 1.5 inches, weighs about 68 g per Alfred’s blog, and sits on a ball joint. It plugs in with a 4.9 ft micro USB cable and a 5 V, 1 A adapter. Alfred’s steps are: install the app, tap Add a Camera, plug the camera in until a voice says it is ready to pair, then hold the QR code on your phone screen up to the lens.

It connects to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only (802.11 b/g/n) and Alfred asks for at least 1.5 Mbps upload, with 2 Mbps recommended. Mounting uses a 3M sticker, an alignment sticker, or screws and anchors, all in the box. The microSD card is not included. Alfred’s help center says to use a FAT32 card from 4 GB to 256 GB and lists tested Kingston, SanDisk, Samsung and Toshiba cards.

What is free and what needs Premium

Per Alfred’s plans page, the free plan gives 2 active cameras, live streaming, local event recording and motion-only alerts. Premium Standard is listed at $2.99 a month billed annually ($35.88 a year) and adds HD streaming without ads, an 8-hour continuous recording loop, 14-day cloud storage, and person, vehicle, pet and sound detection. Premium Plus is $3.74 a month billed annually ($44.88 a year) and adds unlimited cameras, 30-day cloud storage and advanced alerts. The shop page says the camera comes with a one-month Premium trial that renews at $5.99 a month, so cancel before it lapses if you do not want it.

How it scores

Every score below follows the five weighted criteria for security cameras. Scores are our reading of the published evidence, not lab results.

Video quality and night vision (25%): 6.0

The camera streams 1080p with a 130 degree diagonal view, and PCMag reported reasonably sharp video in March 2024. PCMag also reported that the camera has a single infrared LED for black-and-white night video and shows color at night only when there is enough ambient light, with slightly washed-out colors. That conflicts with the shop page, which lists “color night viewing”, and with the brand’s Amazon listing, which describes six 850 nm infrared LEDs and black-and-white night vision up to 16 ft. Treat color night vision as conditional. PCMag also lists three quality modes, Standard (480p), Full HD and Supreme, and says Supreme and the 4x zoom need a subscription.

Detection and alerts (20%): 5.0

Free motion alerts work, and PCMag reported quick alerts with very few false ones. Person detection, detection zones and schedules need Premium, per the shop page and PCMag. Owner reports are mixed: one May 2026 Google Play reviewer of the Alfred app said the camera stopped detecting movement reliably after about a month. That review covers the app in general, so treat it as a warning, not a measured failure rate.

Local vs cloud storage (20%): 5.0

Local recording is a real strength. Inserting a card turns on continuous recording, per Alfred’s help center, and Alfred’s Amazon listing says no Premium plan is needed to record locally. The catch is viewing. Alfred’s August 8, 2024 notice says that for AlfredCam hardware bought after August 12, 2024, free users can still watch live, get alerts and download events, but cannot view events in the app without Premium. Playing back the card in the app timeline also needs Premium, so free owners pull the card and read it on a computer. The shop spec sheet still lists “7 days of free motion-based cloud storage”, which does not match that notice, so confirm in the app before you rely on it.

Privacy and security (15%): 4.5

The shop page lists AES 128-bit encryption for video streams, TLS 1.2 for server traffic and WPA3 Wi-Fi support. Against that, the Google Play data safety label for the Alfred app says data is not encrypted, and the privacy policy names nine ad networks that may collect usage data from free users. We found no independent security audit of the camera. The CPSC recall database returned no recall for this camera when checked on Oct 23, 2026.

3-year cost (20%): 6.0

The base cost is low. Add Premium and it climbs to roughly three times that, which is the figure to compare against cameras with free local playback.

The Practical Math

With no subscription, three years costs $52.33: $29.99 for the camera plus $22.34 of electricity. That electricity line assumes the 5 W maximum the 5 V, 1 A adapter allows, running 24 hours a day at $0.17 per kWh. Alfred does not publish actual draw, so the real number is probably lower.

That total leaves out a microSD card, which is sold separately (we did not read a card price), and Premium, which is optional. If you add Premium Standard at $2.99 a month billed annually, that is $107.64 over three years and the all-in cost becomes $159.97. Premium Plus brings it to $186.97. Many owners will want the ad-free app, so $159.97 is the more honest figure for anyone who wants to watch events on the phone.

Alternatives

The AlfredCam Plus 2 costs $39.99 on Alfred’s shop, adds a 2.5K sensor, a spotlight and weather protection, and ships with a 32 GB card. It has the same Premium paywall. The Wyze Cam v4 was $44.98 on Wyze’s store when we checked prices for our roundup, records to microSD and shows no forced subscription for basic use, though Wyze has disclosed privacy incidents. Who should skip it

Skip the AlfredCam if you want to scroll through events in an ad-free app without paying, if you need Alexa, Google Assistant, HomeKit or IFTTT (PCMag reported none), or if you want a camera for a porch or yard, since this one is indoor only. It also uses 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. Our best security cameras list covers better-supported options.

FAQ

How much does the AlfredCam cost?

$29.99 for a single camera on shop.alfred.camera on Oct 23, 2026. Shipping is $5.99 on one or two items, and free with three or more, per the shop page.

Does the AlfredCam need a subscription?

No for live view, motion alerts and recording to a card. Yes, per Alfred’s plans page, for ad-free streaming, person detection and cloud storage, and per its 2024 notice, for in-app event viewing on cameras bought after August 12, 2024.

Can the AlfredCam record without Wi-Fi or cloud?

It needs Wi-Fi for the app, but continuous recording goes to a FAT32 microSD card up to 256 GB, which Alfred does not include. Alfred’s Amazon listing says playback on a computer needs no Premium plan.

Does the AlfredCam have night vision?

Yes. PCMag reported black-and-white infrared video, with color only in enough ambient light. Alfred’s own pages are not consistent about color, so expect black-and-white in a dark room.

Is the AlfredCam safe to use?

The CPSC database showed no recall on Oct 23, 2026, and Alfred lists AES 128-bit stream encryption. We found no independent audit, and the free app carries third-party ad networks, so use a unique password and read the privacy policy.

What owners report

4.4 of 5 from 849 ratings on Amazon listing run by the AlfredCamera brand store (seller's own listing, reviews can be removed) read Oct 23, 2026

Ratings shown on a seller's own page can leave out reviews the seller removed. We read the most recent reviews ourselves and summarize what repeats.

  • −A repeated complaint on the Alfred app's Google Play page is that the free tier plays an ad before live view opens, and some reviewers say motion detection stopped working reliably after a while. These reviews cover the app in general, not only the AlfredCam hardware.
  • +Praise on the same page centers on the free version being useful for basic live checks and easy to use. We did not read Amazon review text, only the rating shown on the listing.

I liked this at first but after about a month or so the camera stopped detecting movement all the time.

The specs that matter, in plain English

Infrared (IR) night vision
The camera lights a dark room with infrared LEDs you cannot see and shows a black-and-white image. Color at night usually needs a visible light or ambient light.
FAT32
The file format Alfred requires on the microSD card. Cards over 32 GB often ship in another format and must be reformatted.
Event playback
Watching clips recorded when motion was detected. On AlfredCam hardware bought after Aug 12, 2024, in-app event viewing needs Premium.
Continuous recording
The camera writes video to the microSD card nonstop and overwrites the oldest footage when the card fills.
