We do not run these tests ourselves. Independent figures are quoted from the source named in each row.

The Velotric Fold 1 Plus ($1,499) is the best folding electric bike here, scoring 8.1 of 10. It is the only pick that combines a UL 2849 and UL 2271 listing, a 2-year warranty that includes electrical parts, and a 608 Wh battery. Buy the Lectric XP4 750 ($1,299) if hill power matters more than warranty length, and the Heybike Mars 3.0 ($1,099) if you want full suspension for rough pavement.

The ASKGO GT30 ($839.99) is the cheapest, and its score is the lowest because the product page does not state a weight, folded size, warranty or reviews. The picks come from published specs, certification databases and named third-party measurements, not from our own lab. Here is how we score.

How we picked

Each bike is scored 0 to 10 on five weighted criteria. Rated range and battery count 25%, motor and hill power 20%, brakes and UL 2849 certification 20%, 3-year cost 20%, and warranty and service network 15%. The weighted average is the number you see on each card.

We read each brand’s own product page on Oct 23, 2026 for price, weight, folded size, brakes and certification wording. For independent figures we used Electric Bike Report (Velotric, Lectric and Heybike reviews), EV Powered (Heybike range) and UL Solutions for what UL 2849 actually covers. We also searched the CPSC SaferProducts.gov recall database. It lists a 2023 Lectric brake caliper recall for XP 3.0 models only, and no recall for the XP4, Velotric, Heybike or ASKGO models. The picks are researched from published data, not tested in our own lab (method).

Here is how each criterion was read. Range and battery combine the Wh figure with any independent ride. Motor and hill power use rated and peak watts plus torque. Brakes and certification use the exact certification words on each brand page and the rotor size. Service reads the written warranty and whether the brand lists dealers. Cost adds the sticker price to three years of charging, assuming one full charge a week at $0.17 per kWh. Accessories and extra batteries are not in the total. A bike that costs less up front can still lose on this list when its warranty is short or its safety claims cannot be checked, which is why price alone never decides a rank.

The weakest evidence is for the ASKGO GT30. We found no independent range or brake measurement and no certificate number, so it is scored on its page alone, and it ranks last on safety and service. We left out the Rad Power RadExpand 5 Plus because its own page showed it out of stock on Oct 23, 2026, even though it lists UL 2849 and UL 2271.

What to look for

  • Certification wording. UL says UL 2849 evaluates the drive train, battery and charger as one system and does not judge rider control. Look for “UL 2849” plus “UL 2271” for the battery. A “TUV, in accordance with UL 2849” badge is a different statement, so ask the seller for a certificate number.
  • Weight you can actually lift. The brand-listed weights here run 63 to 71 lb with battery. Pull the battery before lifting: the Lectric is 62 lb without its 9 lb pack.
  • Folded size. Measure your trunk or closet against length x width x height. Published folded sizes here run from 37 x 17 x 29 in (Lectric) to 38.2 x 19.7 x 33.1 in (Heybike).
  • Battery size. Look for 600 Wh or more for a 20 mile commute with margin. Velotric is 608 Wh, Heybike 624 Wh, Lectric 840 Wh.
  • Brakes. Choose hydraulic discs with 180 mm rotors. Velotric and Lectric list that setup on their pages, and Electric Bike Report lists it for the Heybike.
  • Warranty length. Two years against one is a real cost difference when a battery or controller fails. Velotric and Heybike offer two years, Lectric one.

FAQ

How far will a folding e-bike really go?

Expect the high-assist number, not the claim. Electric Bike Report’s rides on the Lectric XP4 750 ended at 36.9 miles in its top assist mode (43 percent of the 85 mile claim) and 63.4 miles in Eco. EV Powered’s Heybike rides ended at 54 miles in low assist and 35 in Turbo, which is 54 percent of the 65 mile claim. Divide the claim by two before you decide a bike covers your commute.

Is UL 2849 required to buy a folding e-bike?

It is not a federal sales rule, but it is a useful filter, because UL 2849 covers the electrical drive train, battery and charger as one system. Velotric’s page says it cannot ship e-bikes to New York City addresses because of local regulations, so check your city before ordering.

Can one person lift a folding e-bike into a car?

Often only with the battery removed. Electric Bike Report weighed the Velotric at 67.4 lb against a 63 lb claim, and owners on a public e-bike forum call 65 to 70 lb folders a two-person lift into an SUV.

Which folding e-bike suits a small apartment?

Compare folded footprints first. The Lectric folds to 37 x 17 x 29 in, the Velotric to 37.8 x 19.7 x 33.5 in and the Heybike to 38.2 x 19.7 x 33.1 in. All three are still 63 lb or more, so a ground-floor closet beats a walk-up.

Is the ASKGO GT30 worth considering?

Only if price is the deciding factor. Its page shows no warranty or reviews, so read the GT30 review and the ASKGO vs Heybike comparison first. For wider tires, see fat tire electric bikes, and for full-size options see our best electric bikes.

What owners report

4.9 of 5 from 287 ratings on Velotric store page, Fold 1 Plus (seller's own page, a seller can remove reviews) read Oct 23, 2026

Ratings shown on a seller's own page can leave out reviews the seller removed. We read the most recent reviews ourselves and summarize what repeats.

  • +The Velotric page's rating breakdown shows 247 five-star, 37 four-star and 3 three-star ratings out of 287, and none below three. Recent reviews mention hill climbing and braking.
  • −In the public ebikesforum.com thread on the Lectric XP4, a repeated complaint is weight: owners call heavy folders a two-person lift into an SUV, and one owner reports real-world range well below Lectric's claim.

The fold one plus is not only a gorgeous bike, a comfortable bike but a real beast going uphill.

Velotric store page, Fold 1 Plus review, Oct 2026

The range is reasonable according to me though nowhere close to what Lectric claims.

The specs that matter, in plain English

UL 2849
A safety standard that evaluates an e-bike's drive train, battery and charger as one electrical system. UL says it does not assess whether the rider keeps control.
UL 2271
A battery safety standard used for the removable pack. A bike can list UL 2271 for the battery without a UL 2849 listing for the whole bike.
Wh (watt-hour)
Battery energy: volts x amp-hours. A 48 V, 13 Ah pack is 624 Wh. More Wh means more range at the same assist level.
Torque sensor
A sensor that adds motor power in proportion to how hard you pedal, instead of switching on when the cranks turn.
