Brand claim vs independent measurement
| Product | What the brand claims | Independent figure | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gozney RoccboxOven and stone temperature | 950F (500C), Gozney product page | 795F average oven temperature, 748F average stone temperature, about 2 minutes per pizza (TechGearLab) | TechGearLab |
| Ooni Koda 16Oven temperature | 950F (500C), Ooni product page | No independent lab test of the 16-inch Koda 16 found as of Sep 2026. TechGearLab measured the smaller, 12-inch Ooni Koda 2 at 1102F oven and 848F stone; that is a different, smaller unit and should not be read onto the Koda 16. | TechGearLab |
| Ooni Karu 2 ProOven temperature | 950F (500C), Ooni product page | No independent lab test of the 16-inch Karu 2 Pro found as of Sep 2026. TechGearLab measured the smaller, 12-inch Ooni Karu 2 at an average of 776F oven and 825F stone, with peaks over 1000F when stoked; that is a different, smaller unit. | TechGearLab |
| Cuisinart CPO-401Oven temperature | Over 800F, Cuisinart product page | No RTINGS, HouseFresh, TechGearLab or Consumer Reports test of this model found as of Sep 2026. | Cuisinart |

The Ooni Koda 16 is the pick for most cooks who want a 16-inch pizza, a 950°F ceiling, and the choice of propane or a natural gas line, all for $499 on Ooni’s own site. Cooks who want to burn wood or charcoal instead of gas should look at the Ooni Karu 2 Pro, the 16-inch multi-fuel oven that now carries that name on Ooni’s site. Anyone working with a smaller budget can still clear 800°F with the Cuisinart CPO-401, which lists for $199.99 and is the lightest oven in this guide at 25.96 lb.
Every price, spec and recall check below is pulled from a brand’s own product page, a named independent lab test, or the federal recall database, not from pizzas cooked in a test kitchen; the full method is at /how-we-score/. We also checked all four ovens against the CPSC’s SaferProducts.gov database before ranking them, with details in How we picked below.
How we picked
We scored every oven on five criteria, weighted the way a buyer actually feels them at the grill: max temperature and heat-up time (30%), fuel options (15%), pizza size and stone (20%), weight and portability (15%), and 3-year cost (20%).

These picks come from that published data, not from ovens we fired up ourselves; see how we score for the full method.
What to look for
- A published max temperature of at least 800°F. That is the floor for a crisp, blistered crust in under 5 minutes; the four ovens here range from just over 800°F to a claimed 950°F.
- A heat-up time under 20 minutes. Anything longer eats into a short cooking window once guests arrive; the fastest oven in this guide claims 15 minutes.
- A stone that matches the pizza size you actually make. A 12-inch stone caps you at a personal pizza; go 16 inches if you want to feed a table without reloading the oven.
- Fuel options that match how you cook. Propane and natural gas are the simplest to run; wood or charcoal adds flavor but also ash cleanup and a steeper learning curve.
- Unboxed weight under 45 lb if the oven needs to move. Past 60 lb, an oven is closer to a fixed patio fixture than something you carry to a tailgate.
- A warranty of at least 1 year, ideally 3 to 5. Burners and hinges take the most abuse; the longer warranties in this guide run 3 to 5 years.
FAQ
What temperature does a pizza oven need for Neapolitan-style pizza?
Most Neapolitan-style recipes call for a stone in the 800°F to 950°F range so a thin crust cooks in 60 to 90 seconds. All four ovens in this guide publish a max temperature at or above that floor, though lab tests found real stone temperatures can run well below the number printed on the box; see the Gozney Roccbox row in How it scores.
What is the difference between the Ooni Koda 16 and the Ooni Karu 2 Pro?
Both list a published 950°F and fit a 16-inch pizza, per Ooni’s own product pages. The Koda 16 runs on propane or natural gas only and weighs 40.1 lb unboxed. The Karu 2 Pro adds wood and charcoal as fuel options, heats up in a published 15 minutes versus the Koda’s 20, and weighs 62.6 lb unboxed, close to 23 lb more.
Do gas pizza ovens actually reach the temperature printed on the box?
Not always. TechGearLab’s lab tests measured the Gozney Roccbox at an average oven temperature of 795°F against Gozney’s published 950°F claim, and measured the smaller, 12-inch Ooni Koda 2 at 1102°F oven and 848°F stone, above its own published figures. Neither the 16-inch Ooni Koda 16 nor the Karu 2 Pro sold today has a published independent lab test as of Sep 16, 2026.
Have any pizza ovens been recalled?
The CPSC’s SaferProducts.gov database lists a July 2026 recall for the Cuisinart Propel+ Four Burner 3-in-1 Gas Grill, model CGG-6331, whose built-in pizza oven has a tempered glass window that can shatter. That is a different product from the standalone Cuisinart CPO-401 pizza oven in this guide. None of the four ovens in this guide appear in the CPSC database as of Sep 16, 2026.
Which of these pizza ovens is easiest to carry?
The Cuisinart CPO-401 is the lightest at 25.96 lb, per Cuisinart’s own spec sheet. The Gozney Roccbox weighs 44 lb unboxed per Gozney’s help center, the Ooni Koda 16 weighs 40.1 lb per Ooni’s product page, and the Ooni Karu 2 Pro is the heaviest at 62.6 lb unboxed. For a full grill setup to go with an oven, see /grills-patio/.
How is the 3-year cost score calculated?
For these four ovens, the 3-year cost score is the purchase price alone. None of the four brand pages document a specific consumable, such as a replacement stone or igniter, with a set price and a set replacement interval, and none of the ovens plug into household power, so there is no electricity line to add. Propane itself is a real running cost, but no brand publishes a per-pizza or per-hour propane figure we could verify, so we left it out rather than guess. That is why the Cuisinart CPO-401, at $199.99, scores highest on cost and the Ooni Karu 2 Pro, at $849, scores lowest.
Is a heavier pizza oven always the better-built one?
Not necessarily, and weight alone should not be read as a proxy for quality. The Ooni Karu 2 Pro is the heaviest oven in this guide at 62.6 lb unboxed because it carries a firebox built for wood and charcoal, not because it is more solidly made than the lighter Koda 16. The Gozney Roccbox, at 44 lb, is heavier than the larger 16-inch Koda 16 mainly because Gozney uses extra mass in the double-layer stone floor to hold heat between pizzas, per the Roccbox product page. Match the weight to how far you plan to carry the oven, not to which one feels more expensive in hand.
